About
Maria is an award-winning contemporary Jewellery Designer, 'Forensic' Jeweller and Design Researcher currently based in Dundee, Scotland. She is currently reading for a PhD in Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) in collaboration with the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC) at The University of St. Andrews and the world-renowned Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) at The University of Dundee.
Maria's current Doctoral research is sponsored by the upcoming V&A at Dundee, and focuses on the concept of Forensic Jewellery Identification. Primarily, she is concerned with using design methods to explore how jewellery can be utilised to help establish identity within the forensic process of Disaster Victim Identification (DVI). Other research interests include jewellery's identification potential in homicides, crimes, forensic art, and in relation to new and emerging biometric technologies.
In the past, Maria has undertaken research alongside many experts, companies and organisations in the fields of Design, Jewellery, Gemology, Forensic Art, DVI and Policing to name but a few. This includes both Tayside and Grampian Police, the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), the National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA), Kenyon International Emergency Services and many more. Her research has been published in sources such as Police Review and The Investigator.
In addition to her research, Maria also runs 'Maria Maclennan Jewellery Design' on a freelance and commission basis, having exhibited work across the country and featured heavily in publications such as VOGUE. She lectures occasionally within DJCAD and is currently undertaking a professional postgraduate teaching qualification alongside her PhD with the hope of building on her academic lecturing, conference and public engagement experience(s).
